Chivalry may not even be recognized by the current generation because it has almost died, from quite some time. It started with the knights during the medieval period. It is the code of conduct of being a knight. It comes from the French word chevalerie which means horse soldiery. It involves honor, courtesy and courtly love. Protecting others, especially those who cannot protect themselves like the children, elderly and the widows, is part of a knight's responsibility. They have the strength to fight in wars which was the main topic of concentration in the Middle Ages. Loyalty, nobility and generosity is part of their lives. They uphold honor and glory and they never turn their back to their enemies. They finish what they start.

WHAT MODERN CHIVALRY IS

Modern chivalry is the act of any man to help the weaker vessel, usually women, children and elderly people. Any heroic action is considered chivalrous of the man who performed it like giving his seat to a standing woman, helping an old lady cross the street, fetching a pail of water for her, chopping firewood, etc. While it is not limited to helping women, modern chivalry is often taken such as the man helping a woman is affectionate towards her.

The reason many ask whether chivalry is dead or still alive is the fact that it is no longer seen by many people. It has not died. It is just that, more and more people no longer believe in it. It started with the battle of the sexes; the part where women no longer wanted to be called weak; that they are also capable of doing what men can do especially when it comes to different jobs that used to be only for men. If men can do it, women can do it too. This realization has been the cause of the near-death of chivalry. Many women do not want to be rescued from some disaster because they claim that they can save themselves. Sadly, not all women think the same; but since men do not want to be humiliated in front of others, when they are just trying to help, many have stopped this heroic gesture.

WHO IS KEEPING MODERN CHIVALRY ALIVE

In a crowded bus, it is easy to spot who keeps chivalry alive. In some countries like Philippines there is a divide between people who believe that chivalry is the thing of the past and people who believe it still exists. Most women in the Philippines expect men to offer their seats when the bus is full and they have to stand. Some men, who do not want to give up their seats and also do not want to show it, would pretend that they are asleep. These men still believed that chivalry is expected of them but they wanted to take advantage of the sense of equality that women have voiced out. There are few men who are genuinely chivalrous. They think of their own mothers, sisters, daughters, aunts and grandmothers and do the same to other women in general. They just have to take extra care in handling these women so as not to be mistaken for taking advantage of their womanhood. Real chivalrous men are respectful.

ONLINE DATING CHIVALRY

Chivalry does not exempt online dating. You can be chivalrous by being polite, respectful and honest. Most women like that. In fact, they may even go out of their way to get your attention, although not too much so she can still be considered a lady.

Chivalry is losing its grip as the generation is moving forward. It was known as the code of conduct of the knights during the Middle Ages, now it has evolved as the general conduct of fine gentlemen. We also know that women are equal to men when it comes to capability. Hence, some men have stopped being chivalrous so as not to be humiliated by the opposite sex. Many still believe that chivalry exists. Most women still expect it and some men are chivalrous even on online dating sites.
