Japan Foreign Marriage
The mail order brides world is not as complicated as most people think. Unfortunately, this term "mail order bride" causes lots of confusion and upsets certain groups of people. Personally, I wish we could just drop the term altogether. I much prefer the terms "international dating" or "foreign marriages" because what we're really talking about here is two people falling in love and then growing closer together and uniting their love with the sacred bond of marriage.
No borders or political boundaries can change love or the way two people feel about one another. And there's no reason that nationalism should dictate who is allowed to fall in love with whom.
Japan is no exception to this. For centuries, men from all over the word have sought out the affection, love, and tenderness of beautiful Japanese women.
In fact, one of the very first examples of this occurred in Japanese-to-America immigration policy of the early 20th century. This piece of legislation is called "The Gentlemen's Agreement of 1907" and went a long way towards making it easier for American men and Japanese women to build a relationship long-distance.
Since this happened over 100 years ago, you can imagine that things were different. There was no Internet, email, or webcam access so long ago. In fact, they referred to these relationship arrangements as "picture brides" (part of where the whole mail order brides thing comes from).
So Japanese mail order brides are nothing new, really. This has been going on for a long time. But in the same way that "picture brides" doesn't really apply to today's world, the term "mail order bride" doesn't make much sense either.
Today, meeting a woman from Japan with hopes of building a relationship, getting married, and starting a family - this dream is not so unobtainable. It's quite easy, actually - especially thanks to all the new technology we all have at our fingertips.
